Inmate Charged In August Disturbance Leaves Jail

POSTED: 6:07 pm EST December 20, 2007

An inmate who accused corrections officers of excessive force was released from jail.

Michael Jackson was sentenced Thursday to one year of probation in connection with an Aug. 10 disturbance at the Hamilton County Justice Center.

Authorities said Jackson and four other inmates jammed up their cell doors and flooded their toilets, and the jail’s Correctional Emergency Response Team attempted to restore order.

Target 5 obtained videotape shot by CERT during the incident, which showed deputies using pepper spray and pepperball guns to force prisoners to open up their cell doors.

Jackson is hear making a racial slur toward one deputy as he’s led from his cell, and video shows Sgt. Michelle Moore shooting the prisoner point-blank with a non-lethal weapon as he sits handcuffed and shackled to a chair.

Attorneys for Sheriff Simon Leis said an investigation found that deputies had not used excessive force, but Jackson still bore scars from the incident as he was released from jail.

Jackson, who suffers from attention-deficit disorder and has accumulated a lengthy criminal record, said the experience was a wake-up call.
